JUMILLA > MURCIA

The wine region

The region of Jumilla, in the Murcia area of Spain, has been climbing up the Spanish wine ladder since the early 1990s. Only named an official DO in 1996, the vineyards were replanted after a sudden phylloxera attack in 1989 to produce lighter, but still fruity reds, whites and blush wines made primarily from native grape varieties, most notably Monastrell.

Local gastronomy

For the quality of of the viticulture production there are several traditional plates that must be noted: Mortirigüelo (a pork-based dish), gachasmigas con orugas (the traditional meal of the workers), Rice with rabbit and escargot, gazpacho and fried cheese with tomato and grain. Do not forget the succulent pastries, many made with sweet Monastrell wine: the typical Frioleras (sequillos, horadás y fritillas), wine bread rolls (Roscos de vino), Saint Blas Rolls, mantecados (traditional Christmas sweet), hornazos and cristóbalas.
