PENEDÈS > BARCELONA > CATALONIA

The wine region

Long the reference point of Catalan wines within Spain, the last few decades have seen a resurgence with wineries such as Torres, Jean Leon and Codorniu leading the vanguard. Located just half an hour from Barcelona and backing up Montserrat mountain, the region of Penedes can be divided into two main areas: Vilafranca del Penedes, the "The city of wine," and Sant Sadurni d´Anoia, the heart of Spanish Cava.

Local gastronomy

Birds are the identifying characteristics of the interior Penedes cooking. Among them we find two of the most interesting protaganists: the black rooster and a variety of duck (el gallo negro del penedés and el pato mudo).

The rooster is the result of five months of free range, feeding on cereals and vegetables. The animals can grow to more than 6 pounds and the meat is consistent and fat-free.

The pato mudo del penedés is a very low-fat because its skin is very thin. The meat of the birds is the base, but added to them are the variety and richness of the Mediterranean cuisine, meats, vegetables, game, mushrooms, and a wide range of desserts. Fish and seafood brought in fresh from the fish exchange in Vilanova i la Geltru, one of the most important fishing ports of the region.
