RIBERA DEL DUERO > BURGOS > CASTILE-LEON

The wine region

Located in the west of Spain, along the Duero River, Ribera del Duero is, along with Rioja and Priorat, the most internationally recognized wine region. The continental climate and the strain of tempranillo grape used provide structure and body to the wines, resulting in wonderful, complex wines.

Local gastronomy

Throughout the region, the main dish is el lechazo (suckling lamb), baked over a wood fire just as it has been for ages. The ideal time to truly savor this dish is in the Springtime, while the sheep eat in new pastures.

Another speciality of the ribereña cuisine is the chuletillas de cordero (chuletillas que no chuletas), asadas sobre las brasas de sarmientos.

The sheep's milk cheeses -white and soft served with honey, semicured or cured, are all rich in aroma and body. Typical sweets are las yemas and empiñonados de Aranda, rice pudding, las rosquillas (a Spanish-style donut) and home-made desserts whose recipes are jealously gaurded in the kitchens of the convents where they are made, such as the convent of las Dominicas de Caleruega.

Accompany your meal with a typical hogaza (round loaf of bread) or a torta de aceite (flat bread), salad and a good wine - joven, crianza or Reserva- from Ribera del Duero. ¡Buen provecho!
