VALDEORRAS > ORENSE > GALICIA

The wine region

Known for its wines in classical times, in the last decades Valdeorras has been recovering its native grapes (Godello and Mencía) and in making distinctive varietal wines from them. However, the spectacular new generation of white wines is now emerging, and has given rise to a new category called Superior.

Local gastronomy

The high quality cuisine of the region, like the hundred of wineries, is deeply rooted and linked to popular culture. From the Valdeorras kitchen the best dishes are the cocido valdeorrés (stew) , a Sunday dish par excelencia. It is a wintertime dish, very hearty and flavorful. The evening before the cook leaves the ingredients in water (chickpeas, cachucha, pezuña and a heafty peice of ham. The next day, early in the morning, the cook puts everything together in a large pot to slow cook, and adds more ingredients such as chorizo, chicken, a bit of fresh meat, etc. Once the chickpeas are cooked add potatoes and vegetables. The resulting dish is a very rich dish, high in calories and nutritive value that leaves you fully satisfied, and is perfectly washed down with a good glass of wine.

As an appetizer, don't forget to try the sopa de cocido (homemade soup), prepared with the water from the stew. The broth is both rich and flavorful.
