Considered one of the 7 Wonders of Portugal, parts of the castle date back to the 9th century! Given as a gift by the king of Portugal to his wife as a wedding present, this 12th century medieval castle has been restored several times, and now is home to one of the most famous “Pousada” hotels in Portugal.
The City Walls
A testament to Obidos’ longevity, when the walls first appeared is a mystery, but their presence has allowed the town to preserve its medieval charm and beauty throughout the ages. Admire them from below or climb up to get a birdseye view of the town!
Porta de Vila chapel
A 17th century Baroque chapel, it was built by king Joao IV as a tribute to the town’s patron saint, Our Lady of Piety, and is still there to welcome visitors to the town of Obidos.
The various churches, including Santa Maria, the town’s main church and a converted mosque, it houses the stunning Renaissance tomb of Joao de Noronha as well as the paintings of Josefa de Obidos, a 17th century Spanish-Portuguese painter who is buried in the church of San Pedro.
